What Do You Expect?

17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. 18 And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith, he said, Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

The people inside scatter in order to provide a safe landing area for this bed.  Then, the bed lands.  Verse 20, “20 And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” What do you mean your sins are forgiven?  This man is paralyzed…  You see it’s all about expectations.  Maybe you thought that these men were bringing him here so he could walk, move, dance, cheer… whatever again.  But you can’t overlook that these men had FAITH… faith in what?  Faith for what?  What were they expecting?  I can’t help but think from reading this narrative that perhaps all along this was an intervention of the soul and not the body.  That perhaps they could care less about the physical aspect of their friend.  That maybe they cared more about his soul.  Why do I say that, because look at the verse.  Jesus sees their faith and the next phrase from Jesus is “your sins are forgiven.”  Over and over again you hear Jesus tell other people “your faith has made you well.”  But here, is as if He is saying… “your faith has restored your spirit.”  I want this to be pretty clear for you… Your Spiritual restoration is God’s top priority.

Sometimes what we want is not really what we need.  Our wants and our needs get blurred and we pray to God for stuff we don’t need instead of asking him to give us what we need.  Maybe our prayers need to be simplified… maybe we need to start praying “God give me what I need.”

I think if the story had ended there these men would have been praising God for the miracle.  What about you?  What are you expecting?
